Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Radway, England, he served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Regiment of Artillery, British Army. On November 5, 1854, during the Battle of Inkermann, Crimea, Lieutenant Miller was in command of column battery of guns. With his sword, he attacked three Russians and with the gunners of his he battery, prevented the Russians from doing mischief to the guns which they had surrounded. Part of a Regiment of English infantry had previously retired through the battery in front of this body of Russians and he held his position. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace on June 8, 1859. He retired a Lieutenant Colonel and died at age 42 in Cape Town, South Africa.
