Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Kinsale, Ireland, he served as a Sergeant in the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars, British Army. At Gwalior, India, Sergeant Ward with an officer and two other men were in a charge made on enemy positions. Supported by a division of the Bombay Horse Artillery, they charged through the rebel camp into two batteries under heavy fire. They captured two of the enemy's guns and supplied converging fire from the fort until the post was secured. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
