Flora A. Petersen, 87, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at the F.W. Huston Senior Living Center in Winchester, Kansas.

She was born on August 12, 1927, in Muscotah, Kansas, the daughter of Herman and Oreta Beard Zabel. Flora graduated from A.C.C.H.S. in Effingham, Kansas. She was a homemaker and also worked in the housekeeping department for nursing homes in Horton and Hiawatha. Flora was a member of the First Baptist Church at Horton, the church choir, Good News Club with Child Evangelism Fellowship, History and Literature Club, Garden Club, and volunteered at Tri-County Manor.

On May 3, 1947, she married Leo John Petersen at Holton, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 31, 1993. Survivors include two daughters, three sons, thirteen grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Danny Petersen who received the Congressioal Medal Of Honor in Vietnam; and two grandchildren; one great grandchild; four brothers; and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas.
