Melvina was the daughter of James Simpson and Elizabeth Hagan. She married Preston Shaw about 1874 in Kentucky, and they came to Indiana about 1882. Her mother and several siblings also eventually moved to Columbus. Melvina's home at 1532 Franklin St., was a "back-door" neighbor to her mother, who lived at 1531 Washington St.

Mrs. Melvina Jane Shaw, wife of Preston Shaw, died at her home on north Franklin street, Sunday morning at eight o'clock of consumption, aged forty-eight years. She leaves a husband and seven children. The funeral will be held from the residence Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock and burial will be in Garland Brook cemetery.
