John Silva, Sr., 72, was called to his heavenly home on November 26, 2008, surrounded by his loving, caring and ever faithful family. He was born on December 6, 1935, in Laredo, Texas.

Mr. Silva was preceded in death by his parents Juan and Aurora Silva, sister and brother-in-law Aurora and Rodolfo Tenorio, and parents in-law Albert E. and Justina Dalrymple.

John is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 48 years Rosa Maria Dalrymple Silva, children and grandchildren: John (Rosina) Silva Jr. (Rosinita and Rebecca Silva) of Laredo; James Glenn (Leticia) Silva (Christopher, Sydney, Luther Silva) of Laredo; Gail Marie (Juergen) Wollny (Christian, Bjoern, Carolyn, Alexandra Wollny) of Hamburg, Germany; Mabel Sue (Alfredo) Bazaldua (Freddy, Kristina, Larissa, Toriana Bazaldua) of Austin, Texas; Joyce Ann (Daniel) Tamez (Dawson and Damon Tamez) of Hutto, Texas. Further survivors include brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Mary Ellen (Mike) Stassi of Defiance, MO.; Albert † (Avelina) Dalrymple of Rocklin, CA.; Marie (Julian) Holtorf of Ocean Springs, MS.; Daisy Lee Dalrymple of Fresno, CA; Dennis (Carmen) Dalrymple of Laredo and numerous nieces and nephews.

Coach Silva, as he was affectionately known, obtained his BS & MS degrees from Texas A& I University in Kingsville, TX. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army from 1959-1962 while stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany.

He began his career as an educator and coach in 1962 at L.J. Christen Jr. High School. He then transferred to Martin High School and coached numerous football games at Shirley Field. Later he was promoted to Assistant Principal at Martin High School. He was an exceptional mentor and motivational speaker and is remembered for coining the phrase "People of Tigerland" which could be heard and still resounds at the pep rallies to this day. He finished his illustrious career in education as an Assistant Principal at Cigarroa High School, "Toroland," in 1997.

Coach Silva can also be credited for teaching countless Laredoans to swim. He and his family managed the Civic Center Pool and later continued to offer private lessons at his home. He was also a long-time volunteer for the Border Olympics.

Of all the honors he received in his lifetime, the most treasured and heartfelt was his induction into the Tiger Legend Hall of Fame. He was truly humbled and honored by receiving this gracious and prestigious milestone that capped off a fulfilling and legendary career.

Coach Silva embodied the characteristics of love, honor, loyalty and commitment throughout his life and career. He was a giving and nurturing husband, father, grandfather and friend. His light and positive outlook on life touched everyone he came into contact with. He always wore a smile and epitomized what a great man really is.

We would like to extend out thanks to Dr. Carlos Casas, Dr. Michael Galo, Dr. Adolfo Garcia, Dr. Zakaria Hamdan, Dr. Benson Huang, Dr. Jed Wells, Ray Martinez, PTA, all the dedicated and highly efficient nurses of the ICU at Laredo Medical Center, and APC Home Health. We will always be grateful for the excellent care he received.
