Youngest of six children born to Bahram and Saman Shahbahrami, near Yazd, Iran. He immigrated to the US where he continued his medical and surgical training. He completed his internship at DePaul Hospital in St.Louis, Mo. in 1960; completed general surgery residency at Missouri Pacific Employee Hospital in St. Louis in 1961 and Crawford W. Long Memorial Hospital of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.in 1963. In 1965 he finished cardio-thoracic and vascular residencies at both John Gaston Hospital at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and West Tennessee State Tuberculosis Hospital of the University of Tennessee, Memphis. He completed his surgical training upon completion of a pediatric surgical residency at LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in 1967. By 1968, he had relocated to the Bloomington area where he continued his surgical practice until 2004.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn, as well as three children, Dr. Sharon Anderson, Dr. Frank Shahbahrami, Jr. and Dr. Paul Shahbahrami, as well as nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at noon on Friday, July 31, at Day-Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends consider a donation to their charity of choice.
