Gordon “Gordie” Heim, of Mora, passed into Glory on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the FirstLight Health System in Mora. He was 88 years old.
Gordon was born on March 18, 1929 in Lignite, North Dakota, to Anna and John Heim. He was the sixth of seven children in his family. After his father abandoned the family, Anna’s two brothers came to rescue her and the children, bringing them to Ogilvie, Minnesota to live with them.
When Gordie was only eight years old he was diagnosed with a serious heart murmur and was sent to a Christian camp for sick children. There he became committed to his relationship with God, and was a dedicated Christian for the rest of his life.
During his teen years he lived with his sister Cleone and her family in Ogilvie, and would work in the harvest fields at his oldest sister, Marian’s family farm in North Dakota. Gordie paid for most of his own bills and was a hard worker.
His life was forever changed during his senior year at Ogilvie High School, when he met the love of his life, Helen. After two years they got married in Mora on June 11, 1949. It has been evident to all who knew him that Gordie loved Helen dearly for the next sixty-eight years of marriage!
He was the proud father of three children, Gordon Jr. (Michel), Beth (Bob) Wood, and Gayle (Wayne) Huntington. His joy in life has been being a grandfather to; Jason, Jennifer, Jeremiah, Jessica, Brandon, Jonathan, Miriah, Ryan and Grant; and a great-grandfather to Hayden, Blake, Taylor, Malik, Riley, Ryan, Cooper, Milo and Evelyn. Gordie was happiest when he was spending time with family, friends, and traveling.
After working a few other jobs, Gordie decided to go to barber school, and worked as a barber in Mora for sixty years. He was in the Army during the Korean conflict and was active in the American Legion (60+ years), serving as color guard for countless funerals. He was involved in other civic duties including helping to build the senior housing apartments where he and Helen have resided for the past four years, as well as helping to build the pool in Mora. Membership at Calvary Lutheran Church was integral to his life, where he served in many roles, including being President of the congregation. He loved singing in the choir which he did for 45 years!
Gordon is survived by his wife Helen, his younger brother Lyle (Julie), sister-in-law Marian Beck; his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Steve, grandson Brandon, and great grandson Rory. He is busy catching up with his family and friends who have been waiting for his homecoming in Heaven!
