Singer. He was a rhythm and blues musician who became one of the most popular stars of the early rock-and-roll era of the 1950s. He received his early music training from his brother-in-law, guitarist Harrison Verrett. He begin performing in clubs in his teens and in 1949 was discovered by Dave Bartholomew, who helped bring New Orleans' J&M Studio to prominence and became Domino's exclusive arranger. His first recording "The Fat Man" in 1950 became the first of a series of rhythm and blues hits that would sell between 500,000 and 1,000,000 copies. His piano playing became well known along with his smooth vocals and this made him one of the most distinctive rock-and-roll musicians. His later hits which included "Ain't That a Shame" (1955), "Blueberry Hill" (1956), "I'm Walking" (1957), and "Walking to New Orleans" (1960) made him an icon of the early rock-and-roll era. He would go on to record other songs during his career and one of his last hits was a rendition of the Beatles' song "Lady Madonna" (1968). He would also appear in the 1956 film "The Girl Can't Help It". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He also earned many other accolades and awards for his contributions to the music industry. He still made appearances in his later years, singing the hits that made him popular. He passed away after a long term illness.
