Fashion Designer. Famous for his clingy styles, he was dubbed "the king of cling" in the 1980's. His career spanned 6 decades. Alaia's clients included superstars and supermodels. Known as a fashion rebel, he did not follow trends but created his own. He did not show his fashions according to the official show calendar in Paris, but had shows when his designs were ready. Born in Tunisia, he moved to Paris, France in 1957 at the age of 22, to pursue fashion design. Many museums have held retrospects of his work, including the Guggenheim in New York and Palais Galliera in Paris. He won the Best Designer of the Year award in 1984, and in 2008 was named Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur by the French government. His last fashion show was in July 2017, in Paris, France. He died in a hospital in Paris after suffering a heart attack.
