Namibian Statesman. He served as the 2nd Prime Minister of Namibia from August 28, 2002 to March 20, 2005. He earned a teaching diploma at Augustineum Training College in Okahandja in 1960. Four years later, while in exile in the United States, he earned a degree in political science from Temple University. From 1964 to 1972, he served as Associate Representative for the Namibian independence movement SWAPO to both the United Nations and the United States. He later served as the head of the SWAPO mission to the United Nations from 1972 to 1986. In 1986, he became the SWAPO Secretary for Foreign Affairs and served in this position until Namibia became an independent country in 1990. In 1990, he became Namibia's Minister of Foreign Affairs and served until August of 2002, when he was appointed prime minister by President Sam Nujoma. During his tenure as foreign minister, he also served as the President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1999 to 2000. He served as prime minister for almost three years before he was elected speaker of the Namibian General Assembly in March of 2005. His tenure as speaker lasted for ten years before retiring from active politics in 2015.
