She was a famous author, writing several non-fiction books about the Sioux Indians, and a work of fiction, "Waterlily," which was published after her death. She was a member of the Yankton Sioux tribe of South Dakota. She is the aunt of the famous Native American activist and author, Vine Deloria, Jr.
