Musician and Actor. American rock guitarist, known as The King of the Surf Guitar, a guitar legend as well as The Father of Loud. He pioneered and created his own genre of music as well as along with Leo Fender in the late 1950s. He began playing rockabilly, country & western music in 1955 when he moved to El Segundo, California from Quincy, Massachusetts. Some say it was a surf music style however, per Dick Dale "My music comes from Gene Krupa's Jungle Drum Rhythms as well as wild animals roars and sounds and the indigenous people dancing." Due to him being half Lebanese on his father's side of the family, he was drawing on Middle-Eastern music scales and experimenting with reverberation as he worked very closely with Leo Fender and Freddy Tavares. He worked closely with Fender to produce custom made amplifiers, the Fender Stratocaster guitar, Fender Speakers and Fender transformers including the first-ever 100-watt guitar amplifier. He pushed the limits of electric amplification technology, helping to develop new equipment that was capable of producing distorted, thick, clearly defined tones at previously undreamed-of volumes. The breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique and showmanship with the guitar is considered a precursor to heavy metal music, influencing guitarists such as: Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen & Johnny Ramone. He played all styles and genres of music throughout his 65 year career. He played every instrument self-taught.
