Estonian citizenMember in dance troupe "pantera" on board M/S Estonia.

She was at her first trip with the Estonia, and she was housed in an inside cabin without windows along with another dancer named Marge. Because the cabin had no windows, Marge had wanted to leave the lights on, when she had gone to bed, since she feared they would be trapped if anything would happen.
For the same reason, Marge did not wear a pyjama, but instead she put on trousers and a T-shirt; Männiste asked why she had put on so many clothes, and Marge answered saying that she had seen a film about the Titanic and she had even dreamed herself drowning. Just as she had said that, they heard a huge metal-against-metal crash and the Estonia heeled to starboard, without righting up again. Marge jumped out of the bed and told Männiste "Let's get out of there, on the deck!" and "I'm going to run!".

Männiste started to dress herself, while Marge immediately ran out of the cabin and along the corridor. Later, while Marge was ascending the staircase by dragging herself along the handrail, she turned to look back and she saw Männiste slid down the foyer, whose floor was made slippery by the water which had sloshed in, and bang against the wall. Marge, dragging herself along the handrail in the corridor full of panicked men, even having to pass over them, managed to reach the open decks, but she never saw Männiste again after having seen her hitting the wall.
Hedi Männiste, however, apparently was not seriously injured and was able to get back on her foot (as Marge herself had done just before) and she too managed to reach the upper decks and to abandon the ship; swimming, or being driven by the waves, she came next to the raft "G", which had three people on board, including her colleagues Risto and Anneli. The latter, suddenly, heard the voice of Männiste: she was somewhere next to the raft and was calling for help. Risto told her to wait, he would help her, but then a big wave came and they heard nothing more than silence: she had disappeared. Hedi Männiste died in the sea either by drowning or hypothermia. Her body was recovered from the sea between September 28th and 30th.
