Statesman, President of El Salvador. A member of El Salvador's Liberal Party, he served as president from 14 November 1898 until 1 March 1903. Prior to becoming president, He attended the military polytechnic school in 1881, graduating in 1884. He was also engaged in agricultural activities. He then participated in the war with Guatemala and The Revolution of 1885 when he became a major and later general. He is then one of the conspirators that, on 29 April 1894, participated in the overthrow of the government of Carlos Ezeta and Antonio Ezeta within the movement called "The 44". He then led the movement that overthrew President Rafael Antonio Gutiérrez in 1898. He then became president. He is best remembered for promoting the construction of railways, declaring an amnesty for political exiles, and start of the construction of the Santa Ana Theater. His peaceful transfer of power to Pedro José Escalón in 1903 allowed for a degree of political stability that persisted until 1931. After leaving the presidency, he remained active in the army. He was killed in the the war with Guatemala.
