President of Honduras. A member of the Honduran Conservative Party, he served as president from 2 February 1847 to 1 February 1852. Prior to becoming president, he became a lawyer earning his degree from the Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala in 1814. In 1821 he became Mayor of the Province of Comayagua. He was then elected deputy to the Legislative Assembly of Honduras in 1826 where he served for many years. Travelling to El Salvador in 1840 and with the help of General Francisco Malespín, he became secretary of state and then president serving from 1841 to 1842. He then returned to Honduras. He was elected constitutional president. He is best remembered for creating the National University of Honduras and for promulgating the new constitution in 1848. He then retired from politics.
