Tanzanian Prime Minister. He was the first Prime Minister of Tanzania that served from March 2, 1972 until February 13, 1977 and the second Prime Minister of Tanganyika where he served from January 22, 1962 until December 8, 1962. He was a member of the revolutionary party Chama Cha Mapinduzi. He was also a member of the Tanganyika African National Union political party. He was a strong advocate of economic statism. He was married twice and had 17 children.
