Lebanese Statesman. He served as the 5th President of Lebanon from September 23, 1970 to September 22, 1976. He was educated in Tripoli and Beirut and operated an import-export firm in Beirut. In the late 1950s, he was implicated in the murder of several members of a rival clan and later fled to Syria, where he befriended future Syrian strongman Hafez al-Assad. He would later return to Lebanon to succeed his elder brother, Hamid, as clan leader, and held a succession of ministerial posts after being elected to his brother's former seat in parliament in 1960. In 1970, he was elected president. His presidency was soon marked with by his autocratic rule and appointments of inept and crooked clansmen to government positions. He went on to serve for the next six years before stepping down in September of 1976. Before leaving office, he reportedly invited his old friend al-Assad, who was now president of Syria, to send troops to assist the Maronite Christians in their growing war against left-wing Muslim and Palestinian forces. After leaving office, he continued to lead his clan before handing over power to his grandson.
