Anthropologist. He was an American anthropologist and archaeologist who did cultural anthropology with Pueblo groups in the American Southwest and archaeology on the Maya of Honduras. He is famous for leading a Harvard University expedition in 1892 to explore the ancient Mayan city of Copán. He began the excavation of the legendary "Hieroglyphic Stairway" there. He was incapacitated by fever during the excavation and in 1893 died at Copán where he is buried at the archaeological site.
