Actor and theatre director. He was born in Tallinn to Johannes and Ilse Dagmar Laanemets (née Heinluht). He began his career as a child actor at age fourteen when he was chosen for the role of Joosep Toots in the 1969 film adaptation of Oskar Luts' 1912–1913 short novel "Kevade" ("Spring"), directed by Arvo Kruusement. The film proved to be so popular with the Estonian public that Laanemets revisited the role in two more adaptations of Luts' novels: "Suvi" ("Summer") in 1976, and "Sügis" ("Fall") in 1990. Other notable roles include those of Jim Hawkins in the 1972 Russian language Soviet film adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island"; and as Mārtiņš in the 1981 Latvian language historical drama "Laikmetu griežos," directed by Gunārs Piesis and based on novels by Andrejs Upīts. Laanemets also appeared in a number of Estonian television films and series and had long engagements as a stage actor at the Estonian Drama Theatre in Tallinn and the Endla Theatre in Pärnu and appeared in radio theatre. In 1984, he co-founded the Pärnu School Theatre, where he worked as an instructor and stage director.
