Mildred Gregory Washington (1772-1804) married in 1797, Capt. Thomas Hammond (1770/1-1820). They resided at "Happy Retreat" in Jefferson County, [W]Va. which Mildred inherited upon her father's death in 1803. She died in childbirth or from complications shortly afterward. Their children were Charles Henry (1798), George Washington (1802-03), and Thomas Washington Hammond (1804-05).

Mildred Gregory Washington's father was Colonel Charles Washington (1738-99), fourth son of Capt. Augustine (c1694-1743) and Mary Ball Washington (1708/9-89), who was born in Stafford Co., Va. He was a magistrate for Spotsylvania County, Va. He built a house in Fredericksburg which later became the historic Rising Sun Tavern which is on Caroline St. In 1780 he moved to Charles Town, [W.]Va. which he laid out on his land and for him the town is named. He inherited the land from his brother Lawrence Washington. There he built around 1780 the brick mansion "Happy Retreat." It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. He married in 1757, his first cousin once removed, Mildred Thornton (c1739-post1804), daughter of Col. Francis (1711/2-49) and Frances Gregory Thornton (post1719-ante1794), of "The Falls," Spotsylvania County, Va. Their four children were Lt.
