One of the earliest settlers of the Fort Tackett area, Samuel was instrumental in the first surveys and opening the area up to settlement.

Samuel was the son of Charles Washington and Mildred Thornton and a nephew and legatee of General George Washington. He was the husband of Dorothea Thornton.
