El Salvadoran Statesman. He served as the President of El Salvador from December 4, 1931 to August 28, 1934 (acting President) and from March 1, 1935 to May 9, 1944. He entered the El Salvadoran military at an early age and gained combat experience in the 1906 war with Guatemala. He later established a solid record and rose to the rank of brigadier general by 1919. During much of his military career, he served as a professor at the Salvadoran Military Academy. In 1931, he was the running mate on the presidential ticket headed by Arturo Araujo and became vice president when the ticket was successful in the election held that year. In December of 1931, a group of young military officers ousted Araujo and installed him as acting president. He went on to put down a communist-led peasant uprising, which led to US recognition in early 1932. He went to serve until August of 1934, but came back to serve as president in March of the next year. His second tenure lasted for the next nine years until an uprising by the military caused him to resign from office in May of 1944. He went into exile, first in Guatemala, and then to Honduras, where he was later assassinated in May of 1966.
