Daniel R. Bernhardt, called Danny by everyone in my family I've ever heard talked about him, was born March 13, 1922 at Triumph, Minnesota to Henry Frederick Bernhardt and Anna Bernhardt, whose adoptive maiden name was Utesch.

On June 6, 1942, Imperial Japanese Army troops landed on the islands of Kiska and Attu near the western end of the Aleutians, in what was then the U.S. territory of Alaska. About 1,140 troops under the command of Major Matsutoshi Hosumi occupied Attu and began building an airfield and fortifications throughout the island. On July 19, 1942, Danny married Erma Emma Kuehl (born August 13, 1918 to William and Emma Kuehl née Burmeister) in Martin County. In August 1942, the Attu garrison of Japanese forces was moved to Kiska to help fight an American attack there, leaving Attu temporarily unoccupied.Danny entered military service October 5, 1942.In October 1942, a force of 2,900 Japanese under the command of Colonel Yasuyo Yamasaki landed on Attu and resumed work on air base and fortifications.Danny trained at Camp Ord, California.15,000 U.S. troops, including Danny, landed on Attu May 11, 1943.Danny was one of about twenty in the 50th Engineers killed May 29, 1943 fighting off a Japanese suicide attack on the U.S. artillery emplacement atop Engineer Hill on the island of Attu.Fighting in the Aleutian Islands was the only combat on U.S. soil during World War II.At the time of his death, Danny was a Private First Class in the 50th Engineers Combat Regiment.
