Missionary, Linguist, and Anthropologist. Rev. Isaac Bearfoot was a missionary in Ontario, Canada to several Iroquois groups (Mohawk, Onondaga, Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, and Tuscarora), the Anishinaabe (also called the Chippewa or Ojibwa), and others. Bearfoot was himself an Iroquois being born an Onondaga Iroquois and adopted by the Mohawk Iroquois on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario. He attended Huron College in London, Ontario, in the 1870s and was ordained an Anglican minister in 1878. He did scholarly work on several Iroquois languages and translated The Iroquois Book of Rites for anthropologist Horatio Hale. Despite his second-class status as a missionary who was Indigenous, many believe Bearfoot became an important go-between for Indigenous peoples and white Canadians. His papers are preserved in the Diocese of Huron Archives. His obituary appeared in the American Anthropologist.
