Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. His athletic career was split by World War II, in which he served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater. He was primed to represent his country in the 1940 Summer Olympics, which were cancelled because of the war. As a member of the United States Track and Field team at the 1948 Summer Olympic Games in London, England, he won two Gold Medals, one in the Men's 400 meters Hurdles event, and one as a member of the Men's 4×400 meter Relay event with teammates Cliff Bourland, Arthur Harnden and Mal Whitfield. He was coached by his older brother Commodore Cochran, who won the Gold Medal in the 4x400 meter relay at the 1924 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, France.
