Remarked upon by her friend Anna M. McNeill Whistler as a beauty "reminiscent of a Russian artist's paintings", with intense blue eyes. She also remarked upon Josê's strength following the deaths of her two small children.

Josê's father Gen. Joseph Garner Swift wrote in his memoirs: "January 14th came accounts of Jose's being very ill. Sally went to her. The dear child declined rapidly and died on i6th, and was interred in Twilight Dell at Greenwood."
