He was an Olympic gold medalist, winning two gold medals in Paris in 1924, one gold medal and two bronze in Amsterdam in 1928, and a silver medal in Berlin in 1936. He also won a total of 20 medals (8 gold, six silver and six bronze) at seven major international competitions. He died just 4 days before his 101st birthday.
