Mrs. Johanna Pokorski, only child of Michael and Julie Jankowski, was born Oct. 5, 1878, in Poland. At the age of 5 years, she came with her parents to St. Paul, where they made their home until Johanna was through grade school.
They then moved to St. Louis, Mo. and lived there for several years, returning to a farm nine miles northwest of Farwell.
On Oct. 13, 1896, at the Paplin church, she was united in marriage to Joseph Pokorski. In the year 1946, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the farm home.
In 1947, Mr. and Mrs. Pokorski retired and moved into St. Paul, where they had bought a home. Mr. Pokorski died July 16, 1948.
Mrs. Pokorski was a pleasant, lovable person, her sterling qualities of character particularly, her patience and charity, were outstanding. She was a good wife and mother. Her friendship was always the first to be offered and her family was paramount in her thoughts. She had been an active member of the Mr. Carmel Catholic church at Paplin for over 50 years and was an active member of the Rosary sodality of that church. Gardening was her hobby. Besides her own family she raised her grandson, Norbert Skorupa.
Mrs. Pokorski had been in failing health the past year. Five months ago, she became ill and went to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Louis Stefanowicz in Omaha. She died Wednesday, May 2, at the age of 72 years, 6 months, 28 days.
Surviving are her children: Edward and Mrs. Gertrude Stefanowicz, Omaha; Louis, Stanley and Ralph of Ashton; Mrs. Teckla Kucera of North Platte; Mrs. Cashmir Krajewski and Leo of Ogallala and John and Dennis of St. Paul; 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Services were held Saturday at 8:45 at Keating's Mortuary, at 9 am at
SS. Peter & Paul Catholic church with the Rev. Robert Warner offering the requiem high mass. Pallbearers were Delphie Pokorski, Anton Jankowski, Jerry Stefanowicz, LaVerne Pokorski, Carl Hansen, and Norbert Skorupa. Burial was in Mr. Carmel cemetery at Paplin.
Relatives and friends from Ogallala, North Platte, Omaha, Ashton, Grand Island, and Farwell were present.
