Faith Kirkbride Dibble
Longtime Brewster resident, Faith Kirkbride Dibble, died peacefully at home on Sunday Oct. 11, 2009, at the age of 89.
Born in East Orange, N.J., Faith began summering in Brewster with her family the following year. The Kirkbrides helped found Brewster Park and lay out the adjacent Setuckett Club, with baby Faith pulling slips of paper from a hat to determine where each family would build.
Faith attended Kent Place School in Summitt, N.J. Her studies at Sarah Lawrence College were cut short after one year, when she returned home to assist her father after the death of her mother.
In 1944, Faith married childhood friend Robert E. Dibble, at the time a naval aviator in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The couple and their three sons eventually settled in rural Pennsylvania, where they purchased and ran the Cedars Country Store. To Faith, who had grown up in a house with a chauffeur and cook, the transition to storekeeper was challenging at first. Working 11 hour days, seven days a week, the couple managed to restore and transform the 120-year-old business into a destination for visitors throughout the Philadelphia area. The success of the store was due in large part to Faith's acumen at selecting authentic and hard-to-find merchandise, and her artistic approach to displaying it. She also helped found the town's first historical society, and raise funds for a building to house it.
In 1971, after the death of Donald Doane, the Dibbles purchased the Brewster Store, located at 1935 Main St., in Brewster. Armed with experience and antique furnishings collected in Pennsylvania, the couple and their son Tim successfully revived the struggling institution at the center of Brewster.
The Dibbles settled on the Cape for good in 1980, and continued to run the store until their retirement in 1986. That year, Faith, an avid gardener, brought the idea of a townwide daffodil planting to the Brewster Board of Trade. The idea blossomed into "Brewster in Bloom," a yearly celebration of spring's arrival that has become a town tradition.
Faith loved sailing, beachcombing, cross-country skiing and decorating for the holidays, but her consuming passion was reading. She eagerly volunteered at the Brewster Ladies' Library, where her artistic skills were put to use designing signs and posters. She also worked as a volunteer exhibit designer at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. In later years, she could often be seen enjoying a cup of coffee on the front porch of The Brewster Store, her favorite meeting place for 89 years.
Faith Dibble is survived by her sons, Robert Dibble Jr. of Orleans, Timothy Dibble of Brewster, and Matthew Dibble of Oakland, Calif.; grandchildren Jenifer, Justin, Meadow, Santee, Corinna, Gray, Rachel, and Jasper; eight great-grandchildren, and dear niece Betsy Van Sant of Brewster.
A burial service will be held on Oct 24, at 2 p.m. at the Brewster Cemetery on Lower Road. A memorial service will also take place in early May to coincide with the return of the daffodils (date and time to be announced).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Faith Kirkbride Dibble's name to The Brewster Ladies' Library Association, 1822 Main Street, Brewster, MA 02631.
