Crimean War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Private in the 67th Regiment, Hampshire Regiment. At Taku, China, August 21, 1860, Private Lane's regiment was attacked by the enemy at there fort entrance. He with an officer, before an entrance had been effected by the enemy to enlarge an opening in the wall, through which they eventually could have entered, stopped the forward assault and was severely wounded. For this action in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and later was promoted Sergeant.
