Paul Berndt’s first wife was Elizabeth Ann McDougal, married 22 Aug 1886 per Iowa, County Marriages, 1838-1934. Elizabeth’s sister, Susannah, married John Wesley Vinzant. Paul and Elizabeth had a son, William, born 27 Sep 1888 and Elizabeth died a few days after William’s birth. At the age of three weeks William was taken into the home of his aunt and uncle, John & Susannah Vinzant. William “Bill” was later adopted by John & Susannah, but maintained his surname. John Wesley Vinzant's family Bible gives Paul’s name as “Ernest August Paul Berndt.” The 1900 census shows Paul at age 46 was born August 1854 in Germany, has been married seven years to Fannie born Feb 1851 (married about 1893); 1920 shows Paul age 55, born Germany, immigrated 1883 (thus not in 1880 census); 1920 shows Paul age 65 born Germany. Iowa Marriages, 1809-1992 for Joe Taylor’s 27 Feb 1920 marriage shows Chass Anna Berndt’s parents as Paul Berndt and Fannie Stuteville.
In 1900 census, Paul’s mother Carlena/Caroline Mussig Berndt at age 69, born May 1831, is with her son Herman in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. Ohio Death record gives her father’s name as Carl Messig, but also transcribed as Carlena Mossag for marriage record of son Gustavus.

(In the John Wesley Vinzant Family Bible, passed to William Berndt and then to Dale Berndt, all of William's children are listed. At the top is a note "ten children, 8 boys 2 girls." However, eleven names and dates of birth are listed, with the last one being Elvie Betty Jane Berndt, March 10, 1928. The relationship of this individual is not known; it appears that she was an eleventh child?)
