Former Newberry resident Angeline Teresa Armbrust Lackey, 97, of Ypsilanti passed away on December 23, 2015. Born in Wheaton, Illinois on September 13, 1918, Angeline was one of 13 children born to Martin and Frances Armbrust.

She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Royal Lackey, and two children, William Lackey and Judine Leavitt.

She is survived by four children Robert (Mary Jo) Lackey of Marquette, Gerald (Nancy) Lackey of Colorado Springs, Ronald (Deborah) Lackey of Gaylord and Rose (Steven) Gerlach of Saline; daughter-in-law Carol Lackey of Minneapolis; 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Angeline’s faith was at the center of her life. She was a Roman Catholic and an active member of St. Gregory Catholic Church in Newberry for nearly 40 years. She was a graduate of Northern State Teacher’s College in Marquette. She taught elementary school grades from the early 1940s until 1978. Education remained a primary focus for her, as she never really left the classroom and was often called upon to substitute teach. She volunteered in classrooms wherever she lived and tutored children into her early 90s. She also taught catechism classes. Throughout her life, she was fortunate to make time to travel. She visited Germany while her oldest daughter was living there and she traveled to Ecuador, including the Galapagos Islands, twice to visit one of her sons. Before her husband’s death, they were able to travel to Hawaii, Alaska, Florida, and many more places across the United States. After the loss of Royal, she continued to travel and spent several months in Ecuador.

In addition to traveling and bestowing her knowledge and skills on others, Angeline had many hobbies. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, quilting and playing cards.

A funeral mass will be held Friday, May 27, 2016 at 12:00 noon at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Newberry with Fr. Marty Flynn officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at Forest Home Cemetery.
