He and his siblings assumed their mother's surname because the parents never married. In the 1850 Yancey Co., NC Census, he was noted age 6 living with his mother Polly age 31 and sisters Hannah age 13 and Belandora age 4 in HH #803. The family lived next door to William Cooper age 22 who was her his mother's probable brother. John's father, William Bradford, was living nearby on Snake Knob (now Little Creek). In the 1860 Yancey Co., Census, HH #744, his parents were living together and he was noted age 16. During the Civil War, he enlisted at age 18 for 3 years with Co. G, 58th NC Regiment, CSA on July 12, 1862, in Burnsville, NC at which time he took the oath of allegiance to the Confederate States. His recruiting officer was Captain J. W. Peake (Peek). His record showed he was 5 ft. 10", born in Yancey Co., NC and a farmer. He was mustered into active duty on July 15, 1862. The unit moved down to Georgia where John became sick with "Febris Remit" and admitted to St. Mary's CSA Hospital in Dalton, GA. Febris Remit is a latin medical term used during the Civil War to describe reoccurring fever in a 24 hour period. Causes of the fever were attributed to many diseases but Malaria was the most common. He never recovered and Dr. Harris discharged him from the Company on May 26, 1864, and he went back home to Yancey Co., NC. John Cooper first married Amanda Emeline Edwards about 1866 and they had 2 children Jane and Marcus. He married 2nd (age 30) to Martha LEWIS, age 17, on 30 July 1875 in Yancey Co., NC. Witnesses were L. S. Phillips, J Williams, Thomas Duncan, A J Phillips. Martha Lewis was the daughter of Mathew Alexander Lewis and Elizabeth Tipton, born in Egypt Twp., Yancey Co., NC.
