Bio by B. Bradford ~updated 7/14/2020
Hannah Cooper was the d/o William "Billy" Bradford and Mary "Polly" Cooper born and raised in Egypt Twp., Yancey Co., NC. It's possible she was named after Billy Bradford's mother Hannah. Her parents never married and thus she and her siblings John, Belandrona and Andrew assumed their mother's surname. During the 1850 Census, Hannah was age 13 living with her mother, "Mary Cooper" age 31 and siblings, John age 6 and Belandrona age 4, in HH #903; next door was her mother's likely brother, William Cooper, on one side, and Silas A. Hensley on the other in the Lotties Creek area of Egypt Twp., Yancey Co., NC. During the 1860 Yancey Co., NC Census, Egypt Twp., "Hannah Cooper" age 24 and her mother "Polly Cooper age 40 and siblings "John Cooper" age 16, "Bellanda R. Cooper" age 14 and "Andrew Cooper" age 9/12 were living in Billy Bradford's household #744. Also living with the family was John Wilson age 20 working as a laborer. This is how Hannah came to know John Wilson (s/o Thomas Wilson and Mary Ann Hensley) and they married. The marriage was short lived as he died during the Civil War. I could not find a marriage record for Hannah and John but when she married a 2nd time to William Issam Hensley (s/o William Bryson Hensley and Elizabeth "Betsy" Cooper) on February 25, 1866, in Yancey Co., NC, she was noted as "Hanah Wilson". During the 1870 Yancey Co., NC Census, HH#83, William Hensley age 34 and Hannah Hensley age 34, are noted with the following people in their house: Elisha Randolph age 9, "Mary Hensley" age 50 born in TN, Editha age 4 and Belandrona age 2 (their children). "Mary Hensley" was Hannah's mother. No record has surfaced that she married a Hensley and thus most likely an error. They lived next door to Billy Bradford's family in HH #82 who is now married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Wilson (sister of Hannah's first husband John) . Two years later Hannah died in 1872 and some researchers claim from child birth as their son was born the same year she died. Widower William Hensley was left with 3 small children to care for and concurrently recovering from an affliction from the Civil War for which he eventually received a pension. There is no death record for her and her death date was attested in an Affidavit by half brother, Samuel L. Bradford, for William Hensley's pension application.
