Rupert Batz, 97, long considered the dean of Madison's weather forecasters, died Sunday at his home in Waunakee.
Batz started working as a U.S. Weather Bureau meteorologist on June 11, 1930. In the next 27 years, he never missed a day of work because of illness. Batz retired in 1957.
His distinctive, rasping voice was well known throughout the state because of his many radio weather broadcasts over WHA and other stations.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Ave. in Madison.

WAUNAKEE/SUN PRAIRIE — Rupert J. Batz, age 97, died at his home on Sunday, November 6,1988, In Waunakee.
He was born on March 27, 1891, In Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. He had been a lifelong resident of Sun Prairie and
Waunakee. He was a meteorologist for the United States Weather Bureau for 27 years until his retirement. He was a
second lieutenant In World War I. He had a lifelong Interest In outdoor sports and will be remembered by many as the old man who never wore a cap while Ice fishing.
He Is survived by two sons, Gerard (Caroline) Batz of Waunakee, and Willis (Beverly) Batz of Roseville, California; three daughters, Bernadine (Wilferd) Phillipsen of Seaside, California, Esther (George) Hughey, and Joan (John) Kroetz, both of Sun Prairie; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
He was preceded In death by three sisters; a brother; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 10, 1988, at 10:00 a.m., at THE RYAN FUNERAL HOME,
2418 North Sherman Ave. Father Philip C. Keyes will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday,
November 9, 1988, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Burial will be In Sacred Heart Cemetery.
