Mrs. Esther L. (George R.) Hughey, age 65, died on Wednesday, April 25, 1990, very unexpectedly at her home. She was born on November 12, 1924 in Sun Prairie and has been a Sun Prairie area resident all of her life. She was the daughter of Beatrice (Chase) Batz and Rupert Batz. She was married to George R. Hughey on May 22, 1943. Mrs. Hughey attended Holy Redeemer Parochial School, Edgewood High School, and was a 1942 graduate of Madison East High School. Esther was a lyric soprano and received recognition and awards for her talent in high school. She was a member of the Madison Philharmonic Choir, sang for many public functions, and also weddings and funerals, was a member and a song leader of the Sacred Hearts Catholic Church Choir for 45 years, and served on the liturgy commission. Esther sang at San Juan Batista Mission in California in 1989 and a Packer-Bear football game held in Milwaukee in 1981. Esther retired this past March from OHMEDA (formerly Ohio Medical Company), where she was employed since the age of 18. She was a former Treasurer of the Sun Prairie V.F.W. Auxiliary for many years. She is survived by her husband, George R.; a son, Wesley W. (Peg) of Madison; a daughter, Patricia K. Chase of DeForest; a son, Matthew M. (Lauren) of Brooklyn, NY; her mother, Beatrice Batz of Sun Prairie; a brother, Gerard Batz of Madison; a sister, Bernadlne Phllllpsen of Monterey, CA; a brother, Willis Batz of Rosevllle, CA; a sister, Joan Kroetz of Sun Prairie; and five grandchildren, Jill, Ann, Angela, Wayde, and Andrew. A Roman Catholic Mass will be held at the Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Catholic Church, 227 Columbus St., Sun Prairie on Sunday, April 29, 1990, at 2:30 p.m. Father Kenneth J. Fiedler will officiate. Relatives and friends are invited to the visitation at the Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, on Saturday, April 28, 1990 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Sacred Hearts Adult Choir or the Madison Masonic Center Foundation.
