Mrs. Anna B. Bartmess Friend, 88, of West Lafayette, a woman known throughout the community as "Mom" Friend and the mother of three outstanding athletes, died at 2 AM today [Wednesday, May 24, 1972] at Americana Nursing Center, following an illness of three weeks.

Born at Dayton, Dec. 28, 1883, she lived her life in the Greater Lafayette community. In 1908, she was married to Robert T. Friend, who died in 1948. He was a dairy chemist and a broker.

She was the mother of Robert B. "Bob" Friend of Pittsburg, PA, the ace of the Pittsburgh Pirates' pitching staff for 15 years. Another son, Paul E. "Dufie" Friend of Amherst, OH, was captain of the 1944 Purdue University basketball team. A third son, Ray T. Friend of Brownstown, was an outstanding athlete for West Lafayette High School, as were his two brothers. In addition, Mrs. Friend is survived by three daughters.

Mrs. Friend was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church of West Lafayette, was past president of the West Lafayette Music Boosters Association, and held membership in Chapter AY of the PEO Sisterhood, Alphi Phi Mothers and Sigma Chi Mothers.

Included in the survivors are the three daughters, Charlotte (Mrs. Albert P.) Stewart of West Lafayette, Mary (Mrs. Fred B.) O'Mara of Darien, CT, and Josephine (Mrs. Wilbur E.) Christena of Indianapolis; a brother, Lloyd S. Bartmess of Tomahawk, WI; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert J. Friend and Lloyd F. Friend.
