After graduating from West Lafayette High School in 1934, she attended Purdue University where she graduated in 1938 with a degree in Education. During her college days, she sang with "Big Band" orchestras and was nicknamed "The Vest Pocket Venus of Song." She sang in the "Friend Sisters Trio" with sisters Charlotte and Mary as well as the Purdue University Choir which was directed by Charlotte's husband, Albert P. Stewart. She was a former member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and was a lifetime member of PEO.
She worked at Loeb's department store in Lafayette, Indiana, where she met her future husband Wilbur Ellsworth (Chris) Christena. In 1942 she married Chris who preceded her in death in 1982. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, adoring grandmother, delighted great-grandmother, caring sister, loyal friend and faithful Christian.
She was an avid Purdue sports fan and golfer. She also enjoyed a career in property management in Indiana and Florida.
She is survived by son, David of Conway, AR and daughter Mary Jo (Joe) Rotstein of Mount Pleasant, SC; grandchildren Tracey (Andrew) Castle of Mount Pleasant, SC, Alison (Chris) Dommers of La Jolla, CA, Philip (JoAnn) Rotstein of Kirkland, IL and Jessica (Kevin) Ball of Glenview, IL; great-grandchildren Felicia (Bradley) Grondfeldt, Joey, Hailey, Logan C., Evan, Derek, MacKenzie, Logan B., Olivia and Nicholas; brothers Paul and Robert B; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and brothers, Lloyd, Ray, and Robert Tyndall, Jr. and sisters Charlotte Stewart and Mary O'Mara.
A graveside service will be held at the Dayton Cemetery in Dayton, IN on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor David Maki officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charlotte Friend Stewart and/or the Albert P. Stewart Scholarship Foundation(s) in care of the Purdue Foundation, 403 W.
