Joseph was the son of Mary Nuremburg and Jacob Gensterblum.

Joe was united in marriage to Mary Schafer, they were the parents of four daughters Adeline Gensterblum Smith; Helen Gensterblum Meyers, Rogers; Rita Gensterblum Miller; Matilda Gensterblum Fowler Hufnagel; and one son, Francis Gensterblum.
