He was born on April 18, 1914, in Lenoir County, NC, the son of the late Lonnie Denny Blizzard and Lela Catherine Smith Blizzard. He was also preceded in death by a brother and sister, Raeford Blizzard and Mary Blizzard.
Mr. Blizzard was elected elder emeritus and was given a Resolution of Appreciation in November 1990 by the Little Chapel On The Boardwalk Presbyterian Church, which the Blizzards joined in 1956. He had served at various times during the years as a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, and committee member.
He had served on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army since 1960. In 1993, he was presented a certificate of Life Membership by the Salvation Army of Wilmington, NC for serving on the Board for more than 30 years. He continued to serve as a member.
Herman joined the Wilmington Rotary Club in 1956. He served on the Board of Directors several times. He served as club president in 1975 ? 1976, served on several district committees and in 1982 ? 1983 served as District Governor. He was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was most recently honored August 6, 2002, when his Rotary archives, which he so meticulously preserved for so many years, were turned over to Randall Library at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, which was named the Herman Blizzard Rotary Archives.
He was a member of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. Prior to a better business bureau being established in Wilmington, he served more than 20 years as chairman of the Better Business Division of the Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Blizzard also served on the Retired Senior Volunteer Program one day each week at the New Hanover County Courthouse information desk.
Herman was the former owner and operator of Coastal Lighting Supply Company in Wilmington for over 30 years.
During World War II, he served his country honorably in the United States Army.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Mrs. Evelyn W. Blizzard; two children, Brett Blizzard and wife Kathy of Wilmington, and Mary E. B. Taylor and husband Justice Steve W. Taylor of McAlester, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Katie and Chris Blizzard of Wilmington, NC, and Wilson Taylor of McAlester, Oklahoma; six brothers and sisters, Mrs. Naomi B. Johnson of Wilmington, NC, Mrs. Rachel B. Jones, Norman Blizzard and wife Pat, Mrs. Wilda B. Stroud and husband Dallas, and Lonnie H. Blizzard and wife Betty, all of Kinston, NC, and J. B. Blizzard and wife Lolas of Deep Run, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2005, in The Little Chapel On The Boardwalk by Dr. David Walker and Rev. Lee Koontz.
