George Ford was a merchant tailor, a prominent Mason and Shriner, and the director of Philadelphia's North Broad Street Presbyterian Church choir for over 25 years. He was known for his wonderful bass voice, and frequently sang solos and as part of quartets.

George worked as a printer and clerk before becoming a merchant tailor in the 1870s. He worked at that trade until at least 1906.

Masonic groups with which George was associated:
Mozart Lodge, No. 436, Free and Accepted Masons
Corinthian Royal Arch Masons, Chapter No. 250
Corinthian "Chasseur" Commandery, No. 53, Knights Templar
LuLu Temple, Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, commonly called Shriners.

In addition, he belonged to Plato Senate No. 17, Order of Sparta, a "fraternal cooperative insurance order" (but not a Masonic organization). Its members were known as Senators.

He also was associated with the First Regiment Veteran Corps, which was a group of ex-officers and soldiers who had served in the Pennsylvania National Guard's First Regiment of Infantry. Whatever his relationship with this group, no records have been found of him serving in the Civil War or in the National Guard of Pennsylvania.

On July 25, 1863, George married Virginia Benner, whose family was originally from Philadelphia, but had moved to Washington, DC. around 1847. Their children were:
Alain – died in infancy
Isabella and Virginia (twins) – died in infancy
Walter Henry
Anna Mae
Franklin Louis
Clinton Arendale
Virginia Glorvine
Robert Harper George – b. 9/5/1880; d. 11/5/1880
