David Burpee and his brother George were twins. David was named after the family doctor, Dr. David Burpee of Philadelphia.

The first—and apparently only—reference to David in the Philadelphia newspapers (other than his death notice) is an article from the Inquirer, dated August 27, 1899, about a week before his 19th birthday. Among those attending a surprise party for Mrs. Hannah Reed was "Mr. Burpee Ford." It appears that he went by Burpee, for all the city directories list him as "D. Burpee Ford."

In the 1900 census, Burpee is 19, single, and living with his parents and two sisters at 1347 Brown Street in Philadelphia. He is listed as "at school." In the 1902 city directory he is a student, living at his parents' address. From 1904 to 1910 the directories list him either as a student or a clerk.

In the 1910 census he is living with his father and sister Anna at 728 N. 16th, where they are boarders. Burpee is 26, single, and works as a salesman at a department store. He is still at that address in the 1911 and 1912 directories, which list him as a salesman and a clerk, respectively. In August 1912 his father died. When he next moved is unknown, but when he registered for the draft in World War I in 1918, he and Anna were living at 3202 Mantua Avenue in West Philadelphia. Burpee was a floor manager at John Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia. He and Anna then moved to 823 S. St. Bernard Street, where they are listed in the 1919 directory. In the 1920 census he and Anna are still at that address, and living with them are Elizabeth Higgins, their close family friend, and Malinda Cassel, the mother-in-law of Burpee's sister Virginia. At the time, Burpee was 40, single, and a salesman at a department store. He is a clerk in the 1921 directory.

On July 21, 1923, Burpee died at the age of 42. The cause of death was "toxemia from chronic purulent cystitis." His sister Anna, the informant for the death certificate, listed his occupation at the time as stock keeper.
